Different styles of lettering and scripts

As we say elsewhere on our website, "Time-served craftsmen create hand-crafted lettering on memorials in our workshop".

"Hand-crafted" means just that - on our headstones, all the lettering is carved by hand, using mallets and chisels. We do not machine-cut our headstone lettering and then finish it by hand, as many of our competitors do. Our master masons - no mere machine-operators - hand-carve our letters in the 'traditional' way. This means that the quality of our letter-cutting is second-to-none, giving long-lasting results on every occasion.

Incidentally, we hear many of our competitors say "Ah, the general public don't know the difference between hand-carved and machine-cut lettering". At WL Cookson Ltd, we believe that our customers recognise and prefer the long-lasting, high-quality look and feel of our hand-carved lettering over inferior machine-cut or sandblasted lettering, every time.

The fact that we hand-carve our letters also means that we can match any script or lettering you choose. We ensure that our inscriptions are checked once the letters are 'marked on', that is, before they are cut into the stone. Local rabbis visit our premises to check our Hebrew lettering to ensure its accuracy on every occasion, whilst other scripts (Greek, for example) are always checked by well-educated native speakers, both for accuracy of lettering and also for grammatical accuracy.

Here's what Douglas Swan (Senior Vice President of the National Association of Memorial Masons and Chairman of the Technical Committee) wrote in the August 2009 edition of "NAMM News" :

"Hand-carved lettering always looks better than sandblasted simply because the V-shape catches the light and reflects the gold. Sandblasted lettering will not look good gilded ... too shallow and the gold looks flat and will not last very long; too deep and it can look bronzed and will not reflect the light."

Here are some examples of the types of scripts and lettering styles which we use. These are only examples : our master masons can hand-carve any lettering style or any script you require
